Sketches on a journey by foot in Imperial Austria, Styria, Carinthia…
Kyselak's Book
This journey led him to the most beautiful spots of the territories of today‘s Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Bavaria.
For nearly four months Kyselak hiked the Alps, visiting historic sites and places, and climbing various ruins. Kyselak collected enough impressions of nature, landscapes and people to write a book about his adventures.
The first part of his journey he completed by stagecoach, then he hiked from Styria to Carinthia and Slovenia, north to Salzburg, south again and then high up in the Tyrolean mountains. The way back home was mainly a journey on the rivers Inn, Salzach and Danube.
Kyselak’s writings on nature and landscapes, of people and of countless visits to historic sites were published four years later, in 1829.
Mirroring the original layout and divided in four handy volumes, the complete original text from 1829, the Jubilee Book is published by Edition Tandem.

A three month journey
Today, Kyselak’s tour touches Austria, Slovenia, Italy (South Tirol) and Germany (Bavaria). Kyselak made the trip alone, accompanied by his marvellous white shepherd dog DUNA.
Until Bruck an der Mur Kyselak takes a stage coach — to cross the well known part of Lower Austria south of Vienna.
Along the river Drau /Drava he crosses the Radlpass, walks to Mahrenberg /Muta and Starograd.
Crossing Carinthia, Kyselak passes Villach and walks up in northern direction, up to the Alps. He crosses at 2.400m above sea level and soon visits marvellous Bad Gastein. Following the Salzach river, he hikes north and via Dürrnberg to Berchtesgaden.
From there, the hard alpine challenges begin…
More Journeys
1829 Kyselak’s book was published in two volumes.
In the epilogue, he mentiones more journeys that will be published soon. But his early death clouded his success as a brave traveller all over Central Europe.
Where Kyselak has been from 1826 to 1831, is the focus of our research project WHERE WAS KYSELAK?
